A small whitish to pale buff waxcap with decurrent gills and a strong characteristic smell of Russian leather (old book bindings) or cedar wood. It often grows in troops in unfertilised grassland, in fixed dunes and occasionally at roadsides. It usually appears late in the season and is widespread but uncommon.
