TitleFungal foes in your garden no 62: Fairy Ring Mushrooms

Review (by Malcolm Storey)

Over 50 spp of fungi can cause fairy rings in grassland. These can survive for 100-150 (or even 500) years.

The mechanism is explained: nitrogen released during fungal metabolism stimulates grass growth, c. 50% depletion of organic carbon inside the ring.

Control measures for misguided gardeners who wish to control these organisms are described.
