Review (by Malcolm Storey)

Discusses the formation of adventitious shoots (suckering) which seems to be restricted to certain plants and the presence of a supernumerary (unpaired) chromosome which makes the plants sterile. The two characters appear to correlate and the suggestion is that suckering provides a means of survival by vegetative reproduction for plants with the extra chromosome which cannot set seed. Suckering also provides a means of spread for sterile violet hybrids.
