| Review (by Malcolm Storey) | The well-illustrated keys enable identification to family, then genus, but not to species. Having ascertained the genus, species identification requires comparison of the external genitalia with drawings in the species accounts. The important characters are indicated by arrows. The species accounts give size, broad distribution and habitat, and highlight the diagnostic features of the genitalia. They are accompanied by line drawings of wing veination, and of male and female genitalia (upon which species identification is largely based), usually a colour photograph of the wings showing veins and markings, and often a colour photograph of the living insect. The first RES Handbook to be printed in colour throughout. |
