Seasonal changes in predator community switch the direction of selection for prey defences

By counting peck marks on Plasticene caterpillar models, the selective advantage of distasteful caterpillars having bright colours is shown to be reversed during the fledging season of their avian predators when inexperienced predators favour brightly coloured prey.
