Review (by Malcolm Storey)

DNA study of actively growing fungi using PCR and 454 pyrosequencing. Few of the sequences corresponded to known species.

Cultivated and fallow fields harbor distinct communities of Basidiomycota, with Tremellales, Corticiales and Cantharellales more abundant in the farmed field, while Phallales, Russulales and “Volvariella” were important in the fallow field.

Several potential plant pathogens, and one potential human pathogen, were found in the cultivated field.
