Review (by Malcolm Storey) | Key to species, and lengthy species accounts obviously written by somebody who knows the species well. The species concept is, as always in BFF, on the narrow side, although in Coprinus at least this approach, (if not always the detail) is in line with the culture results of other workers (eg Kemp). An Ecological List of Species groups them by substrate. [ 'BFF' = British Fungus Flora colour chart ] |
Errata, Corrigenda & Comments | Key to species: p14, couplet 15: mitriform means broadest near base (apiculus end), not apex. p18, couplet 45: states spores: 7.5-10/4.8-5.8µm for 36 xanthothrix (this is copied from Orton 1960, - New Check List - Part III) but the species entry, p 58, gives 7-9/4.5-5.5(-6)µm. Unfortunate since the *C. domesticus* group is separated on small differences in spore size and shape. p25, couplet 98: "Note": 63 *disseminatus* is keyed in couplet 80 not 89. Figures: Not always easy to relate the number to the drawing: 198, 201 and 222 refer to the spores above. Fig 16 is *C. comatus* not *C. atramentarius*. Figs 113 and 209 are missing. Fig 179 is marginal cystidia (*C. disseminatus* has no facial cysts) *C. heterosetulosus*: 2nd line should say fig 213 not 216. |
Examine | Compound Microscope |
Specimen Preparation | Identification is based on microscopy of cap setae or veil and spores |
Identification difficulty | Mostly straightforward if the microscopy is done, but some species pairs depend on spore width (*C. radiatus*/*macrocephalus*, *C. domesticus*/*ellisii*, *C. triplex*/*trispermus* - which are now synonymised) |
