Review (by Malcolm Storey) | A detailed work which has stood the test of time comparatively well. Although many genera have been split and most of the varieties have since been elevated to species, the work is still eminently usable. A major feature is the beautiful paintings. The originals of these still exist and are held in the Natural History Museum. Editions I and II were slightly shorter and included varieties which were progressively promoted to full species in editions II and III; a trend which has continued to this day.
