Review (by Malcolm Storey) | Dichotomous key to 5th (final) instar nymphs of these small homopterans. The 5th instar is recognised by the separate final tarsal segment; in previous instars tarsal segments are all fused. The taxonomic section starts with a simplified key to genera and subgenera which applies to just the British fauna. This is followed by a more detailed key to Families which is based on the Holarctic fauna. The individual family and genus keys follow. Much use is made of ratios of measurements, referred to by acronyms explained on pp9, 10. |
Examine | Compound Microscope |
Specimen Preparation | Cleared and mounted microscope preps. Phase contrast is useful. |
Identification difficulty | Much of the identification hinges on comparative measurements and fine details of the circum anal ring. Dissection is not required. Many are host-limited, so this helps too. |
