Review (by Malcolm Storey) | A study of three species of Peronospora infecting Buddleja, Scrophularia, Veronica and Hebe. It appears that P. grisea is distinct but P. sordida and P. hariotii are very close if not conspecific, but the necessary culture experiments have yet to be carried out successfully. From the higher plant viewpoint, the infection pattern suggests Buddleja is closely related to Scrophularia, Veronica and Hebe, moreover they also share some insect fauna. This has been borne out by molecular studies and Buddleja is now considered to belong to Scrophulariaceae. |
