Review (by Malcolm Storey) | A detailed work which has stood the test of time comparatively well. Although many genera have been split and most of the varieties have since been elevated to species, the work is still eminently usable. A major feature is the beautiful paintings. The originals of these still exist and are held in the Natural History Museum. Edition I (1894) was shorter with poorer quality (collotype) plates. |

Specimen Preparation | Water mounts of spores, often the peridium, and occasionally the stalk. |
