Review (by Malcolm Storey) | Keys to, and detailed accounts of, subfamilies, genera and species. |
Errata, Corrigenda & Comments | Many of the keys are rather long-winded with long couplets which are practically descriptions, eg *Calliphora* takes almost two pages to key out 7 species. But I appreciate this can be useful when dealing with damaged material. The convention appears to be that first item is most reliable, but it would have been nice to see this emphasised if the implication is that it can be relied on in isolation. |
Examine | Stereo Microscope |
Specimen Preparation | Pinned specimens with legs pulled downwards so they don’t obscure the pleurae and sternum. The genitalia (both sexes) should be carefully extended. Some genera (Bellardia, Protocalliphora and female Pollenia) require dissection of the macerated abdomen to make genitalia preps. (p30) |
