Review (by Malcolm Storey) | Although many populations were regarded as being stable, there is evidence of decline nationally in adders (especially in the Midlands) but not slow-worms. Habitat management was the most frequent reported factor. Just over one third of sites were isolated. The report was biased towards protected sites and those managed for nature conservation. The situation elsewhere is known to be worse. Brownfield sitres, not well-covered here, are particularly important. |
