Review (by Malcolm Storey) | Describes the experimental proof of a species of Berberis as the host of the aecial (sexual) stage of this serious wheat pathogen. The authors go on to point out that new highly aggressive strains of the rust have emerged in areas with susceptible species of Berberis. In the measured tones of a scientific paper they suggest that it would be highly advisable to prevent cultivation of such species in wheat-growing areas (or of wheat in areas where such Berberis species occur in the wild). In this reviewer’s opinion, this advice should be heeded: millions of people rely on wheat. |
