Review (by Malcolm Storey) | A guide to these familiar but confusingly similar micro-moths. The key is followed by very full species accounts with details of life-history, descriptions of immature stages and fieldcraft. The plates are a major feature of the work and include drawings of genitalia preps of both the male and female of each species, as well as the usual photographs of set adults. Living adults and immature stages of selected species are also shown. The author recommends eschewing the colour photgraphs for identifying adults, since many of the species are rather similar and critical differences are rapidly lost in these comparatively long-lived micromoths. The keys are more reliable, although with worn specimens resort must be had to genitalia preps and the compound microscope. Immature stages can be identified from the food plant using the host plant index on p269 in conjunction with the descriptions in the individual species accounts. |
Examine | with x8 or x10 hand lens ( Stereo Microscope is also useful) |
Specimen Preparation | If frsh and ion good condition: live in a 2x7cm glass tube, or killed, pinned and set. A worn specimen requires a genitalia prep. |
