Review (by Malcolm Storey) | Keys to the European genera, followed by generic accounts with keys to species and species accounts for the Fennoscandian and Danish species. The key to Drosophila and Hirtodrosophila covers all the European species. Although the keys will mostly work for whole flies, critical species identification is greatly informed by details of the male teminalia or female oviscapt (ovipositor). These should be prepared as slide preps. Drosophila suzukii is not included. |
Errata, Corrigenda & Comments | From the corrigenda enclosed with the book: P129: Couplet 37B should lead to 50 not 42. Couplet 38B should lead to 42 not 50. Beware the naming convention for tarsal segments (see p10) "Metatarsomere 1" refers to the first segment (basitarsus) of the hind tarsi, rather than the basitarsus of leg 1. |
Examine | Stereo Microscope ( Compound Microscope is also useful) |
Specimen Preparation | Fresh, alcohol or dried specimens, but those exposed to light will have faded and require microscopic examination of the male teminalia or female ovipositor. |
