Review (by Malcolm Storey) | The long-(like 20 years!)-awaited authoritative guide to our bee fauna, by the two foremost specialists. Two large-format (and heavy) volumes. You’ll need a good-sized workbench to get the keys next to your microscope! Volume 1 contains the keys, profusely illustrated with focus-stacked images and line drawings. The keys are laid-out in three columns, one of text and two for photography with many of the photographs duplicated side-by-side with one marked to show the feature concerned. Volume 2 includes the species accounts and several excellent photographs of each species. The distribution maps show old records (pre-1990) in blue overlain with modern ones (to Nov 2017) in red, so beware that blue indicates decline, not red! Includes a DVD of high resolution versions of the images for better appreciation of detail. This is clearly a work where limitations on quality or space have not been an issue. |
