Review (by Malcolm Storey) | The first usable guide to macromoths since the early printings of South (before the plates became too worn). The moths are reproduced life-size on 42 good quality colour plates using photographs of set specimens. All our species are illustrated, with several examples when the species is variable, although it must be admitted that some specimens look a bit faded. The text, which precedes the plates, describes variation, similar species (not as helpful as you might expect!), where and when to find the imago, larvae and pupae (but no descriptions). Significant features are often illustrated with line and stipple drawings. Genitalia are not used (except Apatele psi/tridens which can be done in life). If you don’t like set specimens, then Waring et al provides an alternative. |
News | There is a second edition with an additional plate. |
Examine | in the Hand ( with x8 or x10 hand lens is also useful) |
Specimen Preparation | Live specimens, at rest. Often need to see hind-wings or underside, but this can be done in the hand with the loss of only a few scales. In a few cases it’s necessary to examine genitalia. |
