Review (by Malcolm Storey) | Dichotomous key to Moth-flies. The author recommends micro-dissecting the fly and mounting the various parts in Berlese fluid under separate cover-slips - a painstaking approach which is increasingly being used for small insects. The key to genera only works for males, but the later keys include females. Freeman in Coe, Freeman and Mattingley (RES Handbook) can be used for female genera, but beware that many genera have since been split. |
Errata, Corrigenda & Comments | P40, couplet 16: the veins near the forks can be VERY faint and special illumination (eg dark ground) may help. Always check the genitalia (and tip of antenna if present). |
Examine | Compound Microscope |
Specimen Preparation | Microscope slide mounts of: head with antennae (mounted face up), left wing (dorsal side upwards), tip of abdomen with genitalia (dorsal side upwards), one fore leg, remainder of specimen with five remaining legs. The coverslip over the genitalia to be supported to prevent distortion. |
