The brachypterous (stump-winged) females jump actively (and very quickly!) by flexing the entire body, pushing off against the pegs on the mid basitarsi and tips of mid tibiae.
The usual killing methods cause this muscle to contract strongly so female specimens become characteristically distorted. They should be killed using either cyanide (eg chopped laurel leaves) or by chilling followed by freezing.
The iridescence of the mesoscutum is crucial to identifing the newly-distinguished E. vesicularis group and this is difficult to see in distorted specimens.
