Literature listed under the following higher taxa may be relevant to Microdon mutabilis s.l. (an ant hoverfly):
As recently understood, the species is so far only recorded from dry well-drained sites, eg limestone pavement, on Mull and near Inverness in Scotland, and the Burren in Ireland. Some specimens from limestone pavement in northern England probably also relate to this species.
The species was only recognised as distinct from M. myrmicae in 2002 by comparison of pupae. The adults are indistinguishable but M. myrmicae is believed to be confined to southern England, so records from northern England probably also relate to the present species.
Like other members of the genus the larvae deveop in ants’ nests, in this case those of Formica lemani.
