A common, small toadstool with a grey pellucid-striate cap and a distinct ’alkaline’ smell (like crushed poppy petals or pea pods). It is mainly a woodland species although sometimes also found in grassland where it is much confused with M. aetites. However, as well as microscopic differences, the latter has a slightly different smell (more like dirty ashtrays)
