A brown-capped toadstool that grows on fallen wood and sawdust, especially of frondose origin. This very common and widespread species, the commonest of the genus, can be found at any time of year if conditions are damp and frost-free.

One of the small group of species with hooked cystidia. Further recognised by the grey cap and concolourous gill edge.

Distinguished from P. pouzarianus by the absence of clamp connections in the cap cuticle.
