One of the most widespread and common species of Psathyrella, especially in early autumn. It has a whitish to yellow ochre or brownish cap with a few white scales at the margin when young. The young gills are lilac grey. It grows in tufts or gregariously on soil or decayed wood in frondose woodland, and also amongst grass on lawns and on mud or decaying debris in dried out ponds.
