This genus is a dumping ground for the star-like mycelial growths which lack fruitbodies or recognisable conidia. These are not uncommon on dead stems, leaves etc.

Asteroma is a left-over from the days when a species name was applied to every distinct manifestation, rather than to a single organism over its whole life-cycle. They are mostly the beginnings of parasitic fungi before the fruitbody has formed or, at least, before conidia have appeared, but would also include those that are genetically incapable of completing spore formation and aborted forms.
