An uncommon, dull-coloured waxcap, it has a whitish, greyish or greyish brown cap, white adnate or emarginate gills and a white stipe. The edges sometimes turn slowly reddish when bruised. It grows in clusters or small groups in unimproved grassland and fixed dunes as well as frondose woodland on rich soils.
