A large toadstool with a very dark grey-brown umbonate cap on a tall grey-brown stem. The young gills are dark grey-brown to chocolate coloured. It is found in open grasslands, pastures, meadows but also heaths, open woodland etc from coastal dunes to subalpine zone. It is widespread.
