Remove abdomen. Boil in 10% KOH for a few minutes and leave to cool.
Wash in water. Gently press with needle to remove macerated contents. Use forceps to remove trachea. Split abdomen with fine forceps introduced through the hole at the thorax junction. Wash in water and remove any more trachea.
Push the ovipositor out by inserting one point of the forceps, and break it free of the abdomen. Remove the abdomen. Cut along the interstitial membrane with a scalpel by running the blade against the forceps. Again, remove trachea.
Wash in water and open out in a thin film of water with forceps and a mounted needle. Remove excess water and add a drop of lactophenol. Chase air bubbles away with a needle and manipulate to mix lactophenol with remaining water. Check ovipositor is fully splayed out. Add a coverslip and examine. (Warm to remove any remaining air bubbles if necessary.)
